Steamed pork bun & quail eggs x 3
We all got steamed pork buns and quail eggs today. This is my son’s lunch, packed in a small 260ml box. He’s also got the last of the black Mission figs, tiny Champagne grapes, a cheese triangle, and some sauce for the pork bun. Today’s lunch was a success because he demolished it all in one sitting at playgroup, and didn’t want more afterward. Hooray!
My lunch (above) adds carrot sticks, and my husband’s lunch (below) adds kimchi.

Grilled cheese lunch
A friend gave us a loaf of sandwich bread from a Japanese bakery (Anderson’s) — it makes good grilled cheese! EDIT: I now have a greater appreciation for the sandwich holders with ventilation holes in the sides — I thought the grilled sandwich was pretty cool when I packed it in this normal box, but evidently it was still warm enough to form condensation on the sides of the box and make the sandwich a bit soggy. If I’d used our ventilated sandwich holder this wouldn’t have been an issue…
- grilled provolone and ham sandwich with honey mustard (cut in half and stacked)
- cherry tomatoes
- black Mission figs
- peach
- mixed nuts
- mini pudding

Kimchi fried rice x 3 cuteness levels
Three levels of decoration: zero (for my husband), medium (for me), and cute (for my son). My husband was very relieved that he got the zero decoration lunch!
My son has kimchi bacon fried rice wrapped in a thin sheet of egg, with a heart cutout and ketchup heart (a.k.a. lid decoration once this gets jostled!). The apples are supposed to be little bunnies, and have been dipped in acidulated water to prevent browning.
