Boston Area Bento?

Postby eventamy » Sat Mar 21, 2009 3:00 pm

Anybody in the Boston area familiar with stores with bento supplies?
I used the Bento Store locator and it provided me with 3 stores in the area, 1 of which is out in Quincy so I probably wouldn't go that far. I used to live in Boston for 4 years while in college (Brighton and Brookline) so I'm fairly familiar with it.
Anyway, I'm taking the girls to see Elmo Live in April with a trip to the Childrens Museum too (woo hoo!). Since I'll be there I wanted to try and find a store with bento supplies. Any suggestions?
The Bento store tool showed Super 88 on Commonwealth and The Porter Exchange in Cambridge? Anybody familiar?
Thanks!

Amazingly the Porter Exchange building's Japantown mall has always been lacking in bento supplies (though certainly not in great food!). Kotobukiya, the Japanese grocery, has almost nothing--a few oval food cups, snacks. Tokai is a better bet, though still minimal, but their selection varies and it's expensive.

The Korean market next door to Hana Sushi (on Mass Ave. in north Cambridge) had 2 overpriced dusty bentos last time I was there a month ago.

I haven't been here in about 5 years, but Kitty World on Newbury Street in Boston had some good stuff: http://www.newbury-st.com/Boston/Search ... itty_World . I bet a phone call would reveal whether it's worth the trip.
Same with the shops at the Harvard Sq. Galleria mall and the Curious George bookstore (downstairs).

Boston's Chinatown always had a lot of good Pokemon and Hello Kitty gear...a toy/video/porn shop whose name eludes me now had some good stuff when I was last there...and there are some tiny Sanrio/kawaii hole in the wall shops scattered around that area that might reveal some good bento finds.

I don't get in to Brookline as much as I used to either (not since our old pediatrician's office there), and I've never been to the Super 88 though I'd guess that'd be worthwhile.

The Boston Children's Museum shop actually had a lot of Hello Kitty last time I was there...3-4 years ago, eep...

I clearly need to do a day trip and check out all these places for Biggie's bento locator! I've been too busy with babies/kids, but Maia is old enough for a field trip...anybody want to join me?

The other places around metro Boston that I find bento items include craft stores like A.C. Moore, Learning Express (toystore), & iParty.

HTH!

Thanks! That does help! I'm up in New Hampshire so don't get down to Boston very often anymore. I'm hoping to more this summer too. Maybe we'll be able to plan a Bento shopping trip this summer!

I'm excited about the Hello Kitty I might find at the Children's Museum! I used to go into Chinatown all the time to go to my favorite restaurant there, Anghor Wat (I'm sure I hacked the spelling!), and my friend used to live right around the corner from Newbury Street. We used to walk our dogs down the Street and try to pick up guys (me with my St. Bernard and her with her Weimaraner!). I need to go there soon too!

And of course if you like Indian food, Kashmir is right underneath Kitty World, with nice outdoor seating on a summer night.

I used to live in NH too (and in VT). If you want to meet up in Chinatown some time in the summer that'd be fun.

OOOH! Indian food is my favorite! Anywhere where I have more then 1 veggie choice is awesome! Kitty World looks really cool! I emailed that link to my mom so she could see. She knows I love Hello Kitty too and is usually the one who finds cool Hello Kitty stuff for my daughters (thermoses, lunch bag, bento boxes), so I'm sure I can pursuade her to take a detour there!
