For me it depends on what color I need, what I'm trying to imitate, and how much time I have to do it! I often add a few drops of food coloring to the cooking water in the rice cooker, and I freeze a bunch in different colors as I make them. I probably do a colored batch every 2-3 weeks and rotate through the colors in the freezer.
