Kiddo went off to school with a pretty simple lunch today. Sandwich on homemade GF raisin bread with ham and provolone cheese and lettuce. Brother's All-Natural Fruit Crisps, asian pear pouch.

On the menu for tomorrow-brown rice rotini pasta tossed with butter, pan sauteed cheesy wieners and mixed broccoli, carrots and califlower. Honest Kids juice pouch.

We're keeping it simple here these days. Plus DS has a very short lunch time.

Today: chicken pasta salad-leftover herbed roasted chicken, brown rice pasta, halved red grapes and mayo mixed with a little honey and apple cider vinegar, colby jack cheese cubes on the side, plain old water to drink

I'm sending cold, filtered, water in a thermos a few times a week to cut back on sugars and save money. ;) I try to send juices that are 100%, no sugar added and usually mixed with Perrier to give a soda feel and cut the sugar(even though it's natural). I'm trying to get away from using juice pouches and boxes, because of cost and waste. We have some left from summer because they were convenient to freeze as an icepack in camp lunches.

Anyone out there lurking is welcome to jump in and share! What you feel is boring same old, same old, might be a fresh, new idea for someone else! Sometimes seeing what someone else packs refreshes our memory too! I know I have forgetten that things existed  until I was reminded again by seeing someone's post! Our kids change too and ideas that I overlooked before because my kiddo wouldn't go for those ingredients, may be menu possibilities now as he's grown and changed and is open to diffrent things.

Today: homemade breaded fish(flounder) portions, hard boiled egg and red grapes, actually in a bento box!

One of our old staples today.

Brown rice penne tossed in olive oil with chopped broccolini and sliced pepperoni, a parmesan cheese mix on the side to sprinkle on later, a "breakfast" blend juice-mixed citrus, and a few odd orange wedges and red grapes.

So far this week:
*GF mac and cheese and cheesy wieners in thermos, grapes
*turkey, swiss bagel sandwich, pear half, citrus juice and perrier
*italian meatballs and brown rice pasta in thermos, grated parmesan cheese on the side, rest of the grapes

The meatballs and pasta in tomato sauce are a small victory. Kiddo had thus far shunned tomato sauce on pasta.
Well, we're making progress toward getting more variety in the menu, in spite of middle school peer pressure. Yay!

Just have to figure out what to send the rest of the week...

Kiddo went off to school today with something resembling a real bento! Minus the onigiri or rice, both of which are NOT peer approved. Oh, well, that made the lunch lower carb. :)

One large tonkatsu(breaded pork cutlet) with sauce, one large ham and green pea potato croquette, hard boild egg half and a few strawberries. Water to drink.

Tomorrow is a field trip so he'll be taking a bagel sandwich-salami and provolone with lettuce, a grape flavor Twisted Fruit and an Honest Kids fruit puch flavor drink pouch.

Kiddo went off to school today with a real bento! and I posted a pic on flickr. :) Not a fabulous one but you can click on the link on my signature below. They're pretty rare these days, both bento and pics!

Today he had sesame teriyaki chicken(organic agave sweetened marinade) and steamed rice with a hard boiled egg and banana. I told him to tell the kids it was Chinese food and they would accept it as American! LOL. They don't know what Japanese food is. Sounds too foreign. He agreed that was a good plan. No nori for nori boy. He seemed to accept plain rice. Nori is not peer approved for middle school ;) :( These days he is supplementing whatever I send with fruit(usually apples) and milk from cafeteria lunch eating friends who don't want theirs. We did have a breakthrough. The kids have admitted that they don't like the cafeteria food and sometimes comment that they wish they had his lunch. Yay! Shhh...just don't tell them it's gluten-free! ;)

We today was another first. DH made Japanese style curry flavored pilaf/fried rice over the weekend and it went over well so kiddo headed off to school with it in his bento plus a mini box of raisins and a banana half. We'll see if it passes the peer test, with it's fragrant smell.

That teriyaki beto last week went well, but as anticipated kiddo only ate 1/3 of the rice I sent. Nori-boy missed his nori.
