Change to new member registrations (to reduce spam)

Postby Biggie » Wed Mar 17, 2010 9:48 pm

I was hoping to avoid this, but I've switched the forum settings so that new member registrations will need to be approved by me or a moderator before they can post to the board. There's been an influx of spammers on the board recently, so this is an effort to save us all from those annoying spam posts that have been littering our screens. Hopefully it'll save the sanity of the moderators as well! :P Thanks for your patience.

Yay!

(Now we just can't forget to check and see if anyone needs approval rather than checking for spam.)

As a test, I've changed it back so that new members can approve their own registrations (I was falling shamefully behind on actually vetting people for approval -- too much volume). Let's see how it goes. Hopefully we won't have another spammer problem, but we can always switch back if we do.

Cheers,
Biggie

Okay, so THAT didn't work! :o

I've gone through the forum to remove the spam topics, and will be starting to update resources. The number of attempted spammer registrations has dropped to almost zero since updating the forum software recently, so hopefully we've got the problem under control. (Fingers crossed!)

The spammers will find a new way around, eventually, but it should hold them off for awhile!
The only board where I don't have any spam trouble is a mostly private one, where new members have to be voted in, and we keep registrations turned off completely. We just turn them on when we know we have a new person coming in, and then turn them right back off again.
Obviously that's not a good option here, but there really isn't anything that's 100% for keeping out spammers. We'll just have to stay on top of it as much as possible :D
