Tarako rolled egg lunch + 1
My ISP has been on the fritz since last week and I haven’t been able to upload (grrr…), so here are a couple of old lunches. First is one that I shared with my son. It’s got tamagoyaki with tarako and green onions (step-by-step tutorial here), a salad and ranch dressing, and cherries with extra orange bell pepper “trees”. My son was excited about the trees, but rejected the salty/savory egg unless it was dipped in Lizano sauce (yum, magical Lizano sauce!).
The second is another toddler lunch packed in my new 495ml three-tier box from Daiso. Each tier is small, but once you look at the total capacity (written on the packaging and usually on the bottom of the box) you can tell that it holds a pretty standard amount. A rule of thumb in Japan is that when a box is packed in the standard manner without candy or junk food, calories correspond directly to capacity (i.e. a 500ml box holds a 500-calorie meal).
- fusilli pasta with Italian sausage, ricotta cheese and tomatoes
- chicken salad from Costco, and a little cheese
- cherries, blueberries and grape tomatoes

Grits and sausage lunch for toddler
Hooray for leftovers! I’m trying to recreate a dish of creamy grits and smoky tomato sauce with sausage/peppers/onions we had at Acorn Winery in Healdsburg this weekend during a wine country event. Zin Restaurant catered it — the dish was outstanding! I’m close but not quite there with this version; tinkering to come in the weeks ahead.

- stone ground yellow grits with cream and cheese
- sausage with tomatoes, red bell pepper and onions
- grilled salmon
- sauce pig with pesto cream inside
- red grapes

Burmese bean lunch
This is for my son when we’re out at a wine country event. It was hard to ward him away from the egg when I was putting the bento together tonight. Anpanman says, “Hi, come eat me!”

- Puerto Rican yellow rice with alcaparrado
- dry pan green beans (leftover from a meal at a Burmese restaurant)
- cocktail sausages
- dashimaki tamago (egg: step-by-step tutorial here)

Muffin sandwich for toddler, + more accessories
Getting back in the swing of things; here’s a little lunch for my son at playgroup. His little friend Sierra usually winds up sharing some, hence two little picks instead of one. There’s an English muffin sandwich with ham and cheese, a car-shaped egg (that my son played with before eating), mustard green gratin, and kiwi. All gone now! (Packed in a 495ml box from Daiso.)
More photos of my Daiso haul and assorted bento accessories under the cut.
