Curry rice for plane trip x 3
We’re all getting on a plane tomorrow, so I made travel bentos for us designed to get around the U.S. security restriction on liquids and gels. I mixed Japanese curry (beef, carrots, onions and potatoes) together with rice — should be fine. Also in our lunches are roast chicken, takuan, cheese, kiwi, and purple cauliflower with tomatoes and garlic. Not shown: side dish containers of persimmons, pears and kiwi. My son’s bento (behind the cut) also uses a fun little plastic sub-dish bucket. I also chose to use our two-tier boxes so that they take up less room in our carry-on bags when we’re done eating.

I covered the curry portion (above) in my son’s bento with Press N Seal to keep everything in place.

Mexican fried rice dinner for toddler
I got creative with some leftover brown rice this week, and made some Mexican-flavored fried rice the other day. My son’s been eating it up, so no complaints there!

- homemade fusion fried rice with brown rice, chorizo, zucchini (courgettes), carrots, onions, takuan, egg, cilantro (coriander leaves), and salsa verde
- Fuyu persimmons and cheese

Currypanman onigiri x 2
Today I used some new gear to make a Currypanman curry onigiri for my son. Currypanman (curry bread man) is a character from the Anpanman cartoons.

- brown rice and leftover green Thai curry onigiri (shrimp, eggplant and corn), shaped like Currypanman (mouth: umeshiso paste, nose/cheeks: ham, eyes: cheese & nori, eyebrows: nori)
- mango in a bear-shaped cup
- kiwi
- country-style pate

My bento adds raspberries and banana slices dipped in orange juice.

Kansas City BBQ ribs x 2
One of these tomatoes is not like the other! It’s a fun little squeeze bottle with a flip-top cap that’s currently holding a tomato-based barbeque sauce. Happy squirting.
- babyback pork ribs home smoked Kansas City-style
- homemade KC-style barbeque sauce in a little tomato squeeze bottle
- Greek green beans and potatoes in tomato sauce with mint
- cherry tomatoes (and a slice of white bread hidden under the ribs)
I shared this one with my son today (hence the toddler-sized picks in the star-shaped Asian pears). Packed in our Laptop Lunchbox.

Chicken & chard bourek x 3
I made Turkish bourek last night with chicken thighs, Swiss chard, feta/cream/cheddar cheese, onions and pine nuts — a family favorite. My two-year-old even helped by spreading some butter between the layers of phyllo! The little 70ml containers have lids, keeping their juicy contents away from the rest of the lunch in transit.

- bourek with chicken, Swiss chard and cheese filling
- copper pennies (carrots, onions and bell pepper in a sweet vinegar tomato sauce — my Grandma’s recipe)
- Greek yogurt with garlic
- cherry tomatoes and cheese cubes

A square version (above) for my husband, and a simple version for my son (below) with garlic yogurt in a sauce container (he wound up eating all of my carrots).
