Steamed pork bun & quail eggs x 3
We all got steamed pork buns and quail eggs today. This is my son’s lunch, packed in a small 260ml box. He’s also got the last of the black Mission figs, tiny Champagne grapes, a cheese triangle, and some sauce for the pork bun. Today’s lunch was a success because he demolished it all in one sitting at playgroup, and didn’t want more afterward. Hooray!
My lunch (above) adds carrot sticks, and my husband’s lunch (below) adds kimchi.

Leftover makeover: Indian curry
Leftover grilled chicken and potatoes gets a new look as Indian curry. Packed in my cheap Chinese thermal lunch jar and an Anpanman snack container (uh oh, I made my husband carry a cute container! Let’s see what happens…).

- chicken and purple bell pepper coconut curry
- braised potatoes
- black Mission figs

Grilled cheese lunch
A friend gave us a loaf of sandwich bread from a Japanese bakery (Anderson’s) — it makes good grilled cheese! EDIT: I now have a greater appreciation for the sandwich holders with ventilation holes in the sides — I thought the grilled sandwich was pretty cool when I packed it in this normal box, but evidently it was still warm enough to form condensation on the sides of the box and make the sandwich a bit soggy. If I’d used our ventilated sandwich holder this wouldn’t have been an issue…
- grilled provolone and ham sandwich with honey mustard (cut in half and stacked)
- cherry tomatoes
- black Mission figs
- peach
- mixed nuts
- mini pudding

Kimchi fried rice x 3 cuteness levels
Three levels of decoration: zero (for my husband), medium (for me), and cute (for my son). My husband was very relieved that he got the zero decoration lunch!

My son has kimchi bacon fried rice wrapped in a thin sheet of egg, with a heart cutout and ketchup heart (a.k.a. lid decoration once this gets jostled!). The apples are supposed to be little bunnies, and have been dipped in acidulated water to prevent browning.

The pink pig returns!
Pig onigiri shaped with ice cream sandwich molds from Williams Sonoma (they also do triple duty as egg molds — see my prior post for details). My son happily ate everything in one sitting today — bento success! Not shown: plastic pick for the kiwi, and a small packet of Anpanman furikake. Packed in my small 260ml box.

- pig-shaped onigiri with nori paste filling (Gohan Desu Yo! brand), topped with sakura denbu for the face and umeshiso paste for the eyes and nose
- dashimaki tamago (tamagoyaki with dashi: step-by-step tutorial here)
- kiwi

Mine has a couple of onigiri (one nori paste, one spicy tuna salad with furikake), tamago, cantalope, and tomato. Not shown: pick for the melon.

My husband said that the thermal lunch jar holds almost too much food for him, so I tried to lighten it up by packing a snack in one layer for noshing throughout the day. The curry is homemade green Thai curry with chicken, eggplant, carrots, purple beans, and Thai basil. The beans in the curry were dark purple when they were raw, but turned normal green in cooking. Interesting!
